High-Renaissance's importance and efficiency

High Renaissance is one of the crucial art timeline in history and has its effect towards to the project. This type of art is generally formed in year 1500 even though the starting date hasn't been written or dated. In this era, master artists were not just focused solely on painting or sculpting (artistic side) but other genre, such as Leonardo Da Vinci was also mastered and created many objects in science field or Raphael was a great painter and also an architect.

Pentecost - Tiziano Vecellio

Paintings with symmetrical buildings and characters with different postures always symbolize something immense, a meaning behind the painting. Why such light shining towards to this particular character in the middle? This could be explained by its timeline, it might be because some artists need to create transcendent spiritual figures and moving forwards to an abstraction.

Creation of Adam

Despite the fact of these grandeur pieces of historic paintings, there are still limits on how it can provide elements which you need to progress the project. The composition and the technique these master artists uses certainly benefit my personal painting style and change the visual style as well (even though it might change slightly), if the choice of genre doesn't match with these, which makes these use of style rather meaningless. The use of element, however, can always be useful for creating painting.

Research - Artist no.4: Raphael

Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino

Raphael was one of the notoriously known painter back in High Renaissance time with variety visual styles and composition of the paintings.

There are few reasons why this specific artist has been chosen as a research purpose. First of all, the use of variety of colour is rather effective to the painting in his particular style, as if the painting itself brings life and able to depict the story well. The other reason is the use of characters in the painting.

Environment: Well known painting, 'School of Athens' is an exemplary painting to show the coexistence of environment and numerous characters. Vibrant colours and correct usage of colour to bring out the maximum potential within the painting. Also, another factor to include is that the positions of each character. Each position they take is different and it either conflicts or works well to convey the story, especially towards to protagonists.

School of Athens

Character: The use of tone and colour in these character/portrait paintings are rather limited. Another weird fact in 'Lady with a unicorn' is that when the proportion of the character and setting itself is in its place but the use of tone and contrast within the painting is rather peculiar in my personal opinion. For example, there should be significantly a lot more shadow coming out from the character is there is a light shooting directly towards to the frontal side.

Research: Video Game no.2

'The Last of Us'

Why this specific choice of game? Surprisingly, it has all of the environment locations and in different time line which is exactly what I wanted to do for my practical experiments. From here on out, I will be discussing and analyzing of these concept paintings what part of the form it uses the most and how well does the artist utilize this form in the painting.

  • Heavy usage of colour green
  • Dominates the entire painting with colour green
  • MORE GREEN!
  • Sensational perspective view: it reminds me of the painting of 'The Last Judgement', where the main focus point and every other elements of the painting gathers to the character.

Compare to the first painting anaylsis, firstly, this painting has a different perspective view. Visually, it seems it has 3 perspective sides (top left corner, bottom right corner & the character). This dynamic view provides the 3 dimensional aspect and applying the flashlight in the middle of the painting brings out this effect even further.
Also, by looking at the main colour palette, heavy usage of blue certainly changes the atmosphere of the painting.

  • One of the prime example of the hybrid environment painting: mixture of urban and rural setting.
  • Personal opinion: Maybe inserting mountain in the background while it's surrounded in urban area is rather unique, almost it doesn't really match with each other. For my own taste, it does not suit well in this particular painting.
  • Typical urban environment square buildings (except the church).
  • It may not be the most important aspect of this painting, character's vision field - focused on giraffes (not zebras).
  • As for the colour: as usual, the main colour choice for rural environment was green & blue.

Research - Artist no.3: Nicolaes Berchem

Hunters Resting

Nicolas Pieterszoon Berchem, or Nicolaes Berhcem is a Dutch artist who specializes in biblical and mythological scenes in his landscape paintings. Also, it is important that his father, Pieter Claesz taught Nicolaes the essentials and foundation of painting and later on, he was taught from another painter, who was specialised in landscape, Jan van Goyen. Later on, he traveled down to Italy, probably to boost his ability to paint and to become a renowned artist. After his journey, his has risen among the Italianists. Despite the fact that it is important to know the information about where he trained or who was he taught from might be important, but more importantly, it's to know where were his inspirations came from and which specific techniques he used is rather more crucial to me at this stage. What can I learn from him? What style did he use?
When he traveled down to Italy, something must have happened. His colour palette and learning new techniques from down south must be one of the reason his paintings have gotten better, so what really happened?

Understanding the value of colour and knowing how much to use it in certain places and the composition of the environment and protagonists are key points to learn from this artist.

Understanding of formal elements

After a discussion with Ryan to broaden out ideas I had before, it became much clearer where I should be concentrating more on with the theme of my choice. Since I have mentioned that I will be specializing on environmental art, there were several aspects which needs to be more concentrated on, such as the usage of value, intensity in colour or the right usage of form. What makes these element unique and how can these element able to shine out the painting. Maybe these process is to find out my personal answer by experimenting numerous times. These formal elements of art is crucial to all artists, not just for painters since some aspects of formal element such as shape and form define objects with 2 & 3 dimensional, specifically speaking, Michelangelo uses form the most in his painting since he is sculptor, not a painter. This gave him more insight towards to the understanding of 3 dimensions and the anatomy and reaction of human (muscles).

Texture: the way something feels, or looks like it feels. For example, to portray the image of grass, right amount of colour, line and shading need to be apply to create the meaning of texture.

Colour: is the way various qualities of life reflected of objects and capture it by the   eye. It can also have several meanings, such as when the colour is yellow or brow, it has the earthy textures and has the warm feeling, whereas the opposite to those colours, such as blue or black, it has the cool feeling to it.

Line: This element is an identifiable path created by a point moving within certain                space. It is easy to define different paths of line if the artist carefully analyze it. Line        is one of the most important aspect of art itself. There are four different types of          line: horizontal, vertical, diagonal and curved.

Shape : These two elements define objects in space. Most likely to have two  dimensions, such as width, height and depth. However, these two have it's own        aspects and able to tell the differences between these two.

Form

-Shape: this form has only height and width, just like 2 dimensional painting.

-Form: this from has height, width and depth, best example for this element                          would be sculpture or other 3 dimensional creations.

Pattern: this form describes the repeated design in the painting or other categories                  of art, e.g. decorative wall where the design repeats itself, or natural like fur or              wood. Pattern can be created by other types of elements such as shape, form,              colour, line etc.

Research - Artist no.2: Piet Mondrian

Piet Mondrian

- A Dutch artist who focuses on abstract genre. The reason why I specifically picked out this artist is to understand his simplified abstract style, Neo-Platicism and how I can use this technique on my project.

I have struggled with contemporary, abstract art, where it uses bare minimum amount of colour, line and sometimes, there is no texture or even tone to create depth to the painting. Even though it requires not a lot of other elements of art, this specific side of neo-plasticism, where the artist restrict themselves to the three primary colours and to a grid of black vertical and horizontal lines on a white ground.

This gave me an idea how I could combine this neo-plasticism, choosing 3 specific colour, limiting the amount colours to use which could be sensational, a combination of abstract art and digital art.

           Composition B (No.II) with Red                                  No.VI/Composition No.II

Formal elements of art - Shape

Shape is simply an area that enclosed by a line and there are two different types of shape, geometric and irregular. The usage of shape will definitely shave a positive outcome of the project. Simple shapes such as triangle, rectangle and circle can be used and will be able to contain numerous meaning, especially to those who concentrate on abstract art, for example, an artist Piet Mondrian with his usage of line and by the usage of line, it creates squares within these line.

Fascinating part of shape is that, for concept artists who design and create specific designs, understanding each of these shape and able to apply is a vital subject to learn.

Re-thinking

After a short discussion with Lynn later afternoon, it was time to re-think on my idea:

'where am I going with this?'
'What am I trying to achieve?'
'Why am I doing this?'

  • What I admire in this work
  • What I think they do very well:
  • and use these to help myself how I can narrow my research down
  • What about the master that do you want to use to make my painting better.
  • Am I interested how they use line, atmosphere, retailing, what is it about well
  • Make it more specific.
  • You can get that efficiency - not having to look at everything.
  • Books about the masters - conclusions about their practice
  • Academic papers - traditional media and digital form - how's there been a lot of works been in this area and how people have made these kind of conclusions and my hypothesis is that I might be able to improve in certain section.
  • Pick 2 or 3 artists from specific period who really inspire me, whose work I admire, learn a little bit, what they were trying to achieve:
  • Is there an artists who are obsessed at light, form, colour etc
  • Try to find out what motivated them, what they were interested, what they were exploring in different periods of their career - make it narrow my research area.
  • I can learn more about them, what they did and explored, taking those explorations and using them as experiments in my own work.
  • Learn about the artists that I choose for my field of research - is there anything that's particularly interesting or helpful, if so continue.
  • What kind of observations and  they did, things they used to help to inspire their process then design yourself experiments along those lines.
  • Take their processes and try to apply them digitally.
  • Then because I will be making these experiments, inspiring to the things that I'm reading - chain reaction (cycling around) so more that I make, eventually the more I will learn (this technique works, this one doesn't so why doesn't it work, how can I improve it, and this will point me to read more about this topic and other works.
  • At the same time, research other digital artists and pipelines and how those digital artists develop their work, learn about their techniques.
'What is it that makes the environment so important in any forms of art?'

Also, I've become a magpie?! (picking up different visual styles, techniques, understanding the differences between traditional & digital media)
  • Eventually, I will be drawing from both side of art topic
  • What I'm trying to do is to bring those two roads together to find the best of both roads because... so that because is what I'm trying to achieve when I narrow that through - connecting up the dots.
  • Experimenting on design, inspired by both sides
  • What I want out of this!
  • Learn these traditional & digital foundations and let's try to find the parallels and stitch it together.
  • What is it that I'm trying to achieve by doing this and why.

Research - Artist no.1: Michelangelo - a renowned genius

Michelangelo, one of the most renowned artist who isn't just an artist but also a writer and an architect as well. His genius pieces of painting and sculpture with his unique style made him recognised by contemporaries as a master. It is crucial for me to educate on how he created these art works using what kind of skills and how formal elements had an impact on his works.

Even though he was a genius, his lack of passion towards to painting compare to sculpture is unfortunate. However, while he was working on various subjects such as constructing tomb for Pope Julius the second or paintings in Sistine Chapel, for example, 'The Creation of Adam' or 'The Last Judgement', with his unique technique and spending immense amount of time, the value of these pieces were eminent. His countless figures in complex poses and its ebullient use of colour explains the main source of this particular style call "Mannerism".

[The Creation of Adam]

[The Last Judgement]

First of all, let's indicate what Mannerist style really is and how Michelangelo able to use this specific style to enhance his personal work back in 15th~16th century. I didn't really understand the meaning of mannerism so I had to research what this style is.

  • Was found around late 15th century, artistic style - characterized by distortion of elements such as scales and perspective.
  • This style sought to represent an ideal of beauty rather than natural images of it, using characteristic distortion and exaggeration of human proportions, perspective etc.
  •
However, what I really need to find from this particular artist is which part of formal element he utilizes the most, how this specific element can be implemented and harmonaizes the painting. While working on educating myself about the techniques he used, it is also important to understand the benefit from learning this style.

'The Last Judgement'

With close attention to the painting, it was obvious that the Christ in top-mid section of the painting is the main point of this painting, where all the attention grasp into this one spot. As I thought that the usage of line and colour were outstands more than other formal elements, so I did some experiments using these elements on 'The Last Judgement'. The expectation is to find the technical side of this painting and what benefit I will receive at the end.

As I have said before, Christ is the focal point of this painting, as if there is a light, it radiates the entire area. For this painting, I have done some technical analysis of my version to know which part of element Michelangelo used the most. Hopefully at the end, the result should have the improvement on the painting by specifically using what Michelangelo used the most.
  • Line works in this piece clearly indicates that the Christ, radiating out like a sun and creating differnet line works, such as verticle, horizantal and curved, at the same time. This dynamic perspective view is the key factor of this painting and will use it later in personal experiment piece.
  • The colour usage: surprisingly, the environment wasn't the greatest part of this painting but the overwhelming amount of blue harmonizes well with the rest of the painting.
  • Unfortuantely, Michelangelo was specialised in sculpture due to the fact that he studied on human anatomy and able to tell the muscle movement and the reaction of human physiology. This particular study gave him more insight of 3 dimensional 'form' and able to create stunning sculptures. This study of his also gave him huge boost towards to his painting, giving him the ability to create dynamic form of character.

Meeting with a Tutor - Lynn Parker

There were several things to talk about with Simone and most of them were how to solve the problem with research proposal and how to make it better in dissertation.
  • Talking over about the problems in the research proposal
  • Reference materials for future progress of the dissertation.
  • How this specific proposal can be improved and how it can make senses by combining definitive research areas (artists, techniques etc) and simplified version of topic (for project).

Priorities:
  • Solve the problem about what went wrong in the research proposal
  • Begin writing the contents for the dissertation
  • Shorten the research area (do not make it broad, make it specific).

Experimental piece no.1: 'War'

Second practice piece: "War"

[First attempt with blue theme]

[Second Attempt with yellow/grey theme]

Using different background colours to match the environment and the atmosphere of the situation. Personally, I still prefer blue colour for this piece since the location resonates ominous feels and the meaning of blue has two sides, calm & sadness. Since unidentified ship is docking and brings terror on future.
Yellow/grey theme colour for this painting somewhat also works in its own way. Few modifications has been made since previous version, such as extra textures on stones, a figure to create more perspective views and broaden out the focus point for the viewers.

The purpose of this project was to understanding of usage of value and intensity of  colour. Fun fact is that since the painting is done digitally, there were so many options to choose and able to modify at any time or circumstances. This huge advantage using Photoshop may seem ridiculously effective since the painter can decide when to combine the formal elements in the painting, despite the fact that it goes against the traditional way of painting, where you have to design and think how the piece will turn out and which element will have dynamic impact on the painting.

Research: Video Game no.1

(Spectacular composition with simple colour choices)

I have played this game with up most interest and it hasn't let me down a single bit. The grand landscape was spectacularly well-done that this game eventually became one of my inspiration. The game explains the story of a living being, trying to find out the identity of its' history and searching for it in each location. There are several different maps and every one of them has its' unique style and atmosphere.

(personal ideas/thoughts of this game)

In this desert area, they have composed the environment well with the colour scheme of their choices, which is colours similar to earth (brown, yellow, dark brown/yellow etc).

This game has shown me the better usage of colour in each different theme and even though it amount of colour to use in each area may be few, but it has indicated that if the artist utilize it well enough, the outcome will surely be a grand piece. With this idea, I will be practice this part of learning on my own painting and see the differences with & without the proper use of colour.

Jackson Pollock, usage of 'Line'

Jackson Pollock, one of the most famously known abstract artist, has created many awe inspiring pieces of work and as a personal opinion, most of his work are related with the use of formal elements.

  • (No.29, Jackson Pollock)
  • No.29, which this work has been labeled as action painting, has been created using floor as a canvas and walked around on top of the painting. He statement was that

"On the floor I am more at ease. I feel nearer, more a part of the painting, since this way I can walk around it, work from the four sides and literally be in the painting."

Personally, the way he paints and 'feel more at ease' explains the perspective and composition of the painting will drastically change, as if the artist have found new ways to paint and experiment on, as the eye adjust to the canvas with huge potential. Also, the process of this piece is following first one line, then another and continues on, which uses one of the formal element, 'Line' and utilizing it up to the maximum point including his way of thinking/painting.
There are other ways to use Line and Jackson Pollock have found himself one. I'm sure I will be able to find and enhance that particular technique and apply it to my personal work.

Practice piece: Alabaster

I've gone back into practicing and experimenting on a new piece, 'Alabaster'. As I have said before, that I wanted to specialize on environment art and paint different areas, such as urban, rural, desert, mountain/snow etc. This piece has similar atmosphere to my previous painting 'Dragon Lair', which was done beforehand.
Since the painting isn't complete yet, there are still potential to improve and with the idea of applying formal elements in this piece, I hope to find differences between the original painting and the improved version.

Branching out ideas using Mindmap

In week 2, we were all doing mind-mapping on a paper to expand our ideas and gather other materials/resources to enhance your original idea. However, the first mind map wasn't really up to my expectation since I was still confused about what my project is going to be. Since it was left little unclear, I tried again to see in a bigger picture, what I am missing out, what the industry standard requires from environment artist etc and that one of the requirement is superior usage of 3D Studio Max, which I haven't used it before.

It seems that at the end of this year, I will be creating environment pieces and while doing so, as personal pieces to enhance my portfolio, it would be wise to start learning and modelling/texturing using 3Ds Max.

Inspirations

Since I will be specializing on Environment Art, first things first, I have found images in different areas, for example, these four different areas, Desert, Forest, Snow/Ice, and Urban, they all have different formal elements and of course, the atmosphere in each area is all different due to their unique shapes and compositions.

 [Desert]

(Images from pinterest, fengzhudesign.com/]

 [Forest/Swamp]

(Images from pinterest, fengzhudesign.com/, deviantart)

 [Ice]

[Images from pinterest, deviantart)

[Urban]

(Images from pinterest, deviantart, fengzhudesign.com/)

Most important part of researching in different areas is that if the artist wants to specialize on Environment Art, they need to go out of their comfort zone and explore other aspects of painting and formal elements of these unique areas. With these images, I will tackle on the most important part, which is to enhance the painting ability up to the peak point to able to adapt any orders within given times.

Last year 2nd semester on Computer Arts Practice, I was rather concentrated on environmental pieces compare to the character, which I have found it more interesting, makes me excited during environment painting and wanted to explore deeper and understand the aspect of environment. From here, you can see two environmental paintings, 'Dragon Lair', and 'Castle'. While I was working on these pieces, I felt it was more natural and had better composition, tones and colours have been applied compare to character concept design I did. However, these two scenery isn't enough which means that I need more experiences in different topics/areas.

I want to focus on improving on my technical ability as a digital painter and at the same time, educate myself the understanding of formal elements even further and apply it in my personal works.

Specialization: Environment Art

Works I have been producing last year were rather broaden out from specializing on particular topic since I was sculpting human figures with anatomical correction involved, or concept paintings on either character and environment. However, trying to do this on last year will be extremely difficult when other artists want to show their specialized area of work and boost their confidence & technical abilities, thus I came up with conclusion that focusing on "environment art" is going to be the main subject.

Since there is a goal to achieve and specific topic to drive towards to, first things first, looking up different artists and gathering resources related to environment art is important.

  • Feng Zhu - an American Concept Designer, mostly known for his work on Star  Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith and his own Design School.
                       (Images from Feng Zhu's website)
  • Noah Bradley - an American Concept Artist, mostly known for working on Magic:  the Gathering cards and numerous digital paintings on 'fantastic art'.

                       (Images from Noah Bradley's website)
  • Simon Stålenhag - a Swedish concept Artist and a game developer, mostly known for his published book, two parts of "Tales from the Loop".
                       (Images from Simon Stålenhag's website)
  • Jonas De Ro - a digital artist, mostly on concept art, illustration for films and  games.
(Images from Jonas De Ro's website)

These four modern digital artists should put me in the right direction to research towards to not just environment but what concept art represent to other artists or what are their reasons/ideals to create these pieces of work. Also, it is a valuable lesson to learn their unique skills to improve my personal art work, for example, their unique set of brushes (mostly for Photoshop) or the their specific perspective views etc.

Semester 1

After the first lecture, 'fear' & 'excitement' would be the correct term to describe this moment and it also reminded me again how serious this last year is going to be.

Professionalism
Employment
Honours Project

These three are main objectives throughout the entire length of year to achieve, even though this seems to be one hell of a challenge to face, but it's also a good challenge for an artist since it will enhance their personal knowledge and technical abilities. After having an idea that wouldn't go away, which is "The exploration of how digital art can be combined with conventional practices used by traditional artists to enhance my work"
which I thought it was a decent idea to improve and research on, but what I really need to do at this point is broaden out the sections which I haven't really considered and research these specific forms and aspects of it.

During lecture with Lynn, all of us were branching out our ideas using Mind map, despite the fact that I wasn't still sure of the idea I had.

(Mind map during lecture)

Since I was still confused of what I really wanted to do and to show it for, talking to tutor or other student was necessary. After a short discussion with Ryan, he thought the first idea I had was rather simple, that the answer of this was going to be 'yes'. However, the huge temptation of wanting to do painting for a project was surprisingly tenacious.

List of priorities:
  • Wanting to do digital painting as a final production - so whatever happens at the end of this year, I want to have digital paintings.
  • Digital Painting Project - it's allowing myself a space within that topic, as a research topic, to perform these pieces as test or experiences, such as;
-Blending lessons from the old masters (painters)?

-Research what renaissance and master artists did and how those techniques                apply to digital painting world?

-How they can teach us to become a better digital painters.

Research, Research, Research

Later on at the meeting with Ryan, I think I've found myself another idea (and hopefully a better one than the first) to begin with, and for this topic, the study of formal elements and what are those formal elements seems to be the biggest object to research on.

"How can those master painters able to use these formal elements to improve modern digital painting?"

  • Such as composition, line, shape, colour etc
  • Can that help improve your painting?
Research ideas:
  • Going and looking for compositions.
  • What types of compositions are out there?
  • How can they be used in painting?
  • What compositions exist out there?
  • What did you do in response to that?
  • How does that work with colours?
  • Have you apply these to any paintings?

Digital collage and painting: Concept

Digital Collage and Painting: Using Photoshop and Painter to create Fine Art is a book containing information about how to paint and incorporate various usages of materials, such as oil/acrylic painting and collage into personal photographs. Also, this book discusses at length the large variety of methods that can be used by you, the visual artist, to create fine art. This very sentence is very similar to what I have in mind, which is how digital art work can be combined with conventional practices used by traditional artists. However, this book in general, the contents it hold is very old, so old that it will not help me in any way to prove this idea of mine, thus this book was not useful, except explaining some parts of technical skills in fine art.
