More references to cooperate with the writing

The dissertation won't write itself and this will need to be done with accurate information including personal opinions (and why this personal opinion can exist in that specific topic and how this opinion can be related with by using certain information etc). That will be the general idea of writing the dissertation - eventually, this is just another essay but longer version with 3rd person writing style.

Naturalism

Naturalism Art

Naturalism, to simply speak, is an artistic movement in 18th century to depict the realistic subjects in its natural settings. It literally portrays the environment and character in that position and the weather. Since the naturalism is trying to depict the natural way of people's living, it cannot lie or add some other features to make the painting grand, even to the use of elements of art. Some may exaggerate the amount of light and tonal work to provide better understanding of what is going on in that particular situation but this style of painting will literally depict what the painter sees and feels. Jules Bastien and Jean-Francois Millet are good example for naturalism painters and they certainly have conveyed the meaning of naturalism within the painting. As a personal opinion, it feels like 19th century's camera work but done in oil painting.

Ideas and examples of Visual Narratives

Story-telling has been acquainted with the use of sign communication and one person has came up with a theory which explains the meaning of the use of sign, "Semiotics", by Charles Sanders Peirce.

Communicating with images can be unpredictable and unable to fully convey the meaning behind when portraying these to audiences. However, a philosopher Charles Peirce describes that images tell stories using semiotics, a type of visual grammar to communicate with audiences. There are three different categories of signs, such as iconic sign, symbolic sign and indexical sign.

This theory of representamen in semiosis, it can be sub-divided into different signs: iconic, indexical and symbolic. Iconic sign is one of the simplest since it needs to resemble the object, for example, a picture or a painting of a figure. A symbolic sign is not defined by what it represents and the meaning which needs to be learnt since its meaning is primarily arbitrary and based on the objects’ cultural background, such as a banknote, flag of a country or company logo. An indexical sign is when a certain object is affected by its meaning, for instance, a smiling facial expression is an indexical sign of human’s pleasure or amusement. These signs are used as a combination in visual image thus audiences can have a general knowledge of visual narrative within an image.

These signs are important factor of interpreting a visual narrative as it means these sign can able to help audiences’ lack of specialist knowledge in visual images and as long as semiotic signs can configure the elements of visual narrative, audiences will generally accept these features.

It certainly has its value in this theory and able to match up with the current project of mine, hopefully able to convey the story by using specific signs within the painting or when I'm going to move the painting by using after effects and give the indexical sign from the 'moving painting'.

Differences between Fine & Digital Art

The fact that I'm concentrating on understanding of formal element is crucial fact on developing the project of mine, for example, how effectively it is used in other forms of art and how master artist are able to use these technique to improve digital painting.

 Fine/Traditional Art

For traditional art, it mainly relies on how the painter uses its technique, colour and the composition of the painting during the progress. Therefore, it depends entirely on the artist himself, start from his mood, skills, style, equipment, environment setting etc will vary the result of the painting or sculptures.

Examples of traditional painting

 Digital Art

In any form of digital art, the progress of forming a piece of painting or sculpture may be similar to fine art but it is a replication of a traditional art by practical use of digital technology. This use of 'technology' is an essential part for the creation of so called 'art'.

Still & Movement

Still & Movement

Still images can be simple and detailed in that moment. It won't move and the object that you draw or paint will stay just as you would want it to. However, because there is no such thing as a movement, when audience engage something else than life drawing or still painting (which audience can instantly realise what the object is trying to tell), such as abstract or avant-garde painting, it will be incredibly hard for them to understand what the artist is trying to portray.

Movement

Walk cycle is an example of a movement, an illusion of a movement. Since you know how humans walk and by putting them in separate pictures, you will instantly realise that the character will move in this direction and in this particular pose even though its just a series of image putted in together. However, compare to still painting or life drawing, it certainly gives the feeling of movement. This is what I need from my project, the feeling of the movement and how it will look different compare to the still image and even these walk-cycle image.

Schedule for project, dissertation & other priorities

  • First priority: Project - This will take significant amount of time and the progression will take from start of the 2nd semester until whenever it ends, which I assume it will be around in mid - late April (before the submission). For the project wise, it is necessary to obtain necessary advice from chosen supervisor to enhance the quality of the project.
  • Second priority: Dissertation - This will also be another important factor during the 2nd semester and will need to pay considerable amount of time to produce a exceptional writing at the end of the stage. This process will take whole 2nd semester and will need advises from supervisors.
  • Third priority: Blog - Blogging will occur every once in a while but certainly few posts in weekly basis to write down the progression of the project and dissertation.
  • Fourth priority: Presentation - This will happen two time, once during March and another one around end of April or start of May. There are still extensive amount of time but still need to be careful and pay attention to it (if not, I will be careless and forget about it until the 2 or 1 day before and rush through everything)
  • Fifth priority: Exhibition - This is the last stage of concern and still have enough time but shouldn't be left carelessly and follow the procedure according to the schedule which I have set up.
With this general schedule for the 2nd semester and follow the schedule accordingly, hopefully i will be in position with no concerns.
